2 NY Mets prospects on track for MLB debut, 1 who'll have to wait until 2026

The Mets are set to promote Blade Tidwell to the Major Leagues. But expect to see these two prospects follow suit this season. But this one former first rounder may have to wait until 2026 for his Major League debut.

Jett Williams will have to wait until 2026

Jett Williams was the Mets’ 1st round pick in 2022, taken 14th overall. Like both Gilbert and Hamel, Williams’ 2023 was very promising. He turned in a 144 wRC+, stole 45 bases, and had a .188 isolated slugging percentage. Williams even reached Double-A by the end of the season, which was only his age-19 campaign.

But he also suffered a similar fate as Gilbert. Williams was only healthy enough to appear in 33 games with 148 plate appearances. He wasn’t particularly good when he was on the field. Williams only hit for a .656 OPS, .322 wOBA, and 99 wRC+. Williams didn’t hit a single home run either, and had an isolated slugging percentage of just .083.

Despite missing most of 2024, Williams is back in action and has done very well for himself to start the year. It’s only been 83 plate appearances, but Williams has a .303/.361/.526 triple-slash, and 154 wRC+. While he’s already struck out 20 times, he already has hit a pair of home runs and has hustled out seven doubles. He’s continued to be a threat to steal, with seven stolen bases in eight attempts.

While Williams is off to a strong start, keep in mind he is still only 21 years old, and he missed most of 2024. It is unlikely that, barring a scorching hot season, the Mets will not promote Williams all the way to the big leagues this season. The Mets currently don’t need much help at shortstop or second base, and while they could use more depth in center field, will likely give Drew Gilbert an extended look before calling up Williams to the Major Leagues.
