The New York Mets didn't make any significant blockbuster trades at last year's trade deadline, which allowed the front office to hold on to many of their top prospects as they continue to deepen their farm system. One of the most notable prospects that they did trade was right-handed pitcher Tyler Stuart in a trade with the Washington Nationals for fan favorite Jesse Winker. We could say that trade worked out in the Mets favor to this point.
Stuart is a former 6th round draft pick from the 2022 Draft class out of the University of Southern Mississippi that hovered around many Mets top prospects lists last season. He was considered a mid-range prospect for the Mets and upon being traded to the Nationals last summer he found himself ranked as their 20th best prospect according to MLB.com by the end of the season.
Tyler Stuart has a chance to build off his Minor League success with the Mets in a different organization this season.
Stuart couldn't have found himself in a better landing spot than with the Nationals, who do have some back end rotation question marks, and I do believe he could make as a serviceable starter at the back of their rotation at some point next season. Stuart is strictly a control pitcher as evidence by his 7.6 walk percentage last season against batters faced and he does a decent job of not giving up the long ball, as he only gave up 10 home runs over 122 innings pitched last season.
Over his three seasons in the Minors, Stuart has produced a 3.31 ERA over 49 appearances (48 starts) with a 1.200 WHIP, which shows he has the ingredients to be a serviceable Major League pitcher. I do believe Stuart is going to start the season in Triple-A, but anything is possible this spring as he was a non-roster invitee to big league camp, which means the coaching staff will want to get a good look at him in game action over the next several weeks.
Stuart is not going to be the type of pitcher to overpower batters at the plate, but with his control and his ability to keep the ball in play, he has a huge opportunity to take a next step for the Nationals this upcoming season. I would not be surprised to see him on the mound against the Mets ferocious lineup at some point in 2025. This also has the chance to be one of those trades where both teams win at the end of the day.
