Ronny Mauricio’s moonshot of a first MLB home run couldn’t help but get New York Mets fans excited for the future of one of the organization’s top prospects. In 101 bats to end the 2023 season, Mauricio hit .248 with two home runs and seven stolen bases. He had his struggles, like most players getting their feet wet in the show for the first time, but all the tools were there.
A torn ACL a little over a month later in Dominican Winter League has been a devastating blow to Mauricio’s development. At this point it is unrealistic to expect Mauricio to have any sort of immediate impact on the 2025 Mets.
Nearly 14 months after the injury he is still trying to work his way back. From SNY's interview with Carlos Mendoza At ‘Amazin Day’ at Citi Field, the Mets skipper said “he’s doing baseball activities, he’s hitting in the cages, taking groundballs, he’s throwing. The running progression continues to get better but we’ll take our time with him at the beginning of camp."
NY Mets to ease Ronny Mauricio back into game speed
If the Mets don’t find a way to bring back Pete Alonso and Mark Vientos makes the switch to first base that could open a spot for Mauricio to compete with Brett Baty to see time at third. With that being said it would be tough immediately pencil a player into the lineup who hasn’t seen game action in almost a year and a half.
If Alonso does come back and Vientos is cemented at third, Mauricio obviously moves down the pecking order and this is a guy who needs nothing but consistent reps upon returning.
How Mauricio performs in spring training and how quickly he is able to get his timing back against big league pitchers will be a big tell to how much he could bring to the table for a team with World Series aspirations. It certainly wouldn't be bad problem to have if Mauricio plays well enough to force management's hand like Vientos did last summer.
Mauricio showed a lot of consistency in Syracuse during that 2023 season. In 116 games he hit .292 with 23 home runs and 24 stolen bases and was playing every day. It seems like a no brainer that Mauricio will once again begin 2025 in upstate New York, which will be his last season of minor league options. Mauricio will have to show that consistency before getting another crack in Queens. Sitting on the bench does nothing for a guy trying to make his return from a major knee injury.
Mauricio’s future is still bright, but it will still need to come with some patience. Give him the chance to work his way back to the player fans saw hit that towering home run against the Diamondbacks at Citi Field.
