Recently promoted NY Mets prospect may be about to explode with power

Two qualities seem to stand out most in the minor leagues: someone stealing a lot of bases or a player hitting with a lot of power. Stolen base numbers tend to drop as a player reaches the major leagues. Home runs, on the other hand, only tend to go up. The New York Mets farm system isn’t full of sluggers with Ryan Clifford as the most prolific. He has other shortcomings keeping him on the farm.

A prospect who has yet to fully break free from the chains of minor league baseball ready to maybe launch some home runs is Corey Collins. Recently moved from Brooklyn to Binghamton, the lefty is going from one of the world’s most notoriously bad ballparks to hit in for lefties to a safer environment.

A sixth round pick from 2024, Collins struggled in his first “full” professional season. He hit .168 in 270 plate appearances. A first baseman who hit 20 home runs for the Georgia Bulldogs before getting drafted by the Mets, his 4 home runs in 2025 was a bit underwhelming.

Something is starting to click with Collins. Even while taking about half of his at-bats in Coney Island where lefties might as well go to the plate with a white flag, he posted a respectable .231/.391/.400 slash line with 8 home runs. He has proven he can draw a walk. This quality does, however, come with strikeouts. He fanned 81 times in 289 trips to the plate.

The numbers have a chance to look dramatically different for the remainder of the year. He has gone 3 for 6 with a pair of RBI since the call-up. It’s only two games. Nevertheless, after hitting 5 of his 8 home runs this year away from Brooklyn, we should expect at some point for those power numbers to take a leap.

In a year where many well-known Mets prospects have had trouble prospering, very few have entered the conversation as sudden risers. Collins is a mild candidate and considering he plays a position of need for the big league club, he’s worth our attention. At least another full year of minor league action needed out of him, it’s the 2028 campaign when we can start to have a discussion of whether or not he’s a guy or the guy.
