Before playing his first professional game, Mets prospect Elian Pena made a decision to benefit himself financially in the future.

Every year will include New York Mets prospects rising and falling. It can take a while before we truly have an idea of who any of those prospects will be. When they have yet to even play a professional game, we have to rely on what the scouts say more than anything else.

Teenage Mets prospect Elian Pena signed with the organization in the offseason and is considered a top 10 prospect in the organization. MLB Pipeline has him ranked 8th behind Jesus Baez and ahead of Ronny Mauricio.

Just 17-years-old and with a major league ETA not until 2030, the young man is already planning for his future. You have to respect it even if the news feels a little sour. According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, Pena has hired the big bad wolf, Scott Boras, as his agent.

A major league ETA of 2030 would mean Pena isn’t reaching free agency until around 2036-2037. At that point, middle relievers might be getting paid $40 million a year due to inflation.

Seeing any player side with Boras creates an icky feeling. Even if we know the Mets are fair game for any superstar free agent regardless of who represents them, it’s never easy knowing your owner and general manager will have to go to war with Boras.

It’s a long way into the future to even think about a bidding war involving Pena. He’ll turn 18 this October and should spend a year or maybe even two playing in the lowest level of the minor leagues while giving us some idea of how he compares against his peers.

By the time this decision matters, there’s no telling what the situation will be with the Mets. Currently 72, there’s a good chance Boras has already retired from his current role. His legacy goes beyond his own negotiating power. The Boras Corporation will need to remain cutthroat in order to accurately represent their namesake.

Pena is on the roster for the Mets team in the Dominican Summer League which begins play on June 2. In less than two weeks, our first highlights of Pena representing the Mets are sure to hit social media. Rumor has it Boras is already thinking of a pun. My guess is it involves calling his new client “pay-nya” with an emphasis on the first half.
