When the New York Mets take the field Tuesday, they’ll do it with A.J. Ewing. After only 12 games of making his presence known in Triple-A, the exciting and speedy center fielder is making his way to the majors.

17 stolen bases in 30 minor league games, a .339/.447/.514 slash line, and reputation as a good defender highlight this promotion. By bolding going here, the Mets signal a few things to every fan.

Here’s what the Mets promotion of A.J. Ewing tells us

1) The Mets aren’t going to go away quietly

“We need to think about the future” was not part of the thought process here. The Mets couldn’t find any excuse to keep Ewing down in the minors any longer. Available playing time for him to show off his stuff, it made no sense to hold him back any longer when the major league roster was suffering.

Only a small percentage could be said is a way to divert some heavy boos after the most disappointing 5-4 road trip imaginable. Vibes are high right now in anticipation for what he can do. Moves like this tell us the Mets aren’t going to pack it in quickly and start selling prematurely. If anything, I’d be on alert for them to pull off one of the more significant trades for the remainder of May.

2) Luis Robert Jr. is probably going to miss a lot of time

The Mets weren’t going to call up Ewing unless they were pretty confident Luis Robert Jr. would be out for a while. Yet to resume baseball activities, we should plan for a lengthy absence.

Several Mets injuries have had them rotating players back to positions where they belong. We can figure Ewing goes into center field, Carson Benge back to right field, Brett Baty finds his footing at third base, and Bo Bichette stays at shortstop while Francisco Lindor is out. Aside from Bichette, it’s the kind of defensive alignment that actually suggests run prevention.

3) There’s a good chance the Mets remain aggressive with other promotions

The Mets gave Carson Benge an Opening Day roster spot after only a small sample in Triple-A last year where he didn’t play particularly well. They elevated Nolan McLean quickly through the upper minors last year. Jonah Tong soon followed. Then there was Brandon Sproat.

Back in 2024, David Stearns gave Christian Scott an early opportunity to pitch in the majors as well. It was unexpected because of how long every other young Mets players’ call-up seemed to always take. Fans spend a large part of 2022 screaming for the kids. Now in 2026, many of them are barely clinging to an everyday job if at all. If the Ewing promotion works, the Mets can’t be shy about repeating the maneuver with another hot bat in Syracuse.
