It’s not just because he has the word “Met” in his name that makes New York Mets prospect Brian Metoyer the guy to root for in 2026. All of the circumstances about this 29-year-old lifelong minor leaguer make him a guy you just have to cheer on to make the majors.
Drafted in 2018 in the now non-existent 40th round, Metoyer has logged an incredibly low 126.2 professional innings. Multiple injuries, including Tommy John surgery, have slowed him down.
Others would have given up. He hasn’t quit on the dream just yet. His desire to continue living the dream paid off in 2025 with Metoyer putting together a low-key strong season, propelling him just a tad closer to maybe one day getting to the show.
Brian Metoyer is the Mets prospect every fan should be rooting for
A 40th round pick already has the odds stacked against him. Both he and the Mets organization have waited patiently and tried to turn this forgotten prospect, who was the last pick they took in 2018, into something more.
Hayden Senger, whom the team took in the 24th round in 2018, is the lowest draft pick the Mets took and signed who made the majors. Rounds 31-39 didn’t sign, but Metoyer did and the climb up the farm has been a slow one.
Metoyer started the year in High-A, pitching to a 0.93 ERA. It was the first game experience he had since 2022 in Binghamton where he allowed 8 earned runs in 7.1 innings. He remained steady in Double-A this time around, pitching to a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings.
Metoyer was an exceptional strikeout pitcher, fanning batters at a 13.3 K/9 rate in Double-A. Wild, however, he had a 5.1 BB/9 rate which held him back from a truly good campaign.
Heavy walk totals have limited Metoyer throughout his career. Just a 5.1 hits per 9 rate, he’s at 5.8 walks per 9 in his career. Not a single batter took him deep and he allowed only 2 doubles as the lone extra base hits. For him, it’s all about taming some of the control.
Looking for a good underdog story? Metoyer provides it.
