2) The closer situation is resolved and we’re thrilled about it
We’ll know for sure what the closer situation will be in 2026 and beyond. Want something more specific? Edwin Diaz is coming back on a 4-year deal with a team option for a fifth year.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone if Diaz comes back to the Mets or lands elsewhere. The Toronto Blue Jays seem like the largest threat, but they also have other places to add large and adding more than one qualifying offer rejector has major consequences. They’ve already signed Dylan Cease. Will they double-up on QO penalties with Diaz or pivot over to Roberto Suarez?
Diaz back to the Mets has always made the most sense and this is the week when we’ll get our resolution. Devin Williams is a fine insurance policy, but a downgrade in terms of finishing off games. He is built to be an excellent 8th inning option, not the last line of defense.
Re-signing Diaz puts the Mets in a position to turn their attention elsewhere for the rest of the offseason. Land that big bat and add the starting pitcher upgrade we know they need.
