The New York Mets have been in a good position to make the Postseason all year. Even with multiple slumps throughout the season, they've never fallen out of contention. Over the last month, the Mets have made multiple top prospect promotions, and each one has led to a massive shift in Postseason and World Series odds. Their most recent call-up could do just that for the Mets for the third time this season.
Their first major top prospect promotion was Nolan McLean. McLean is a consensus top 40 prospect in the sport, and he is doing things we haven't seen from a Mets pitcher, ever. The right-hander has a 1.37 ERA, 29.5% K%, and 7.4% BB% over his first four outings and 26.1 innings of work. The day before McLean's first MLB start, the Mets' projections were good, but not overly inspiring.
FanGraphs projected them to have about 86 wins with a .531 winning percentage. Their odds of making the Postseason were 76.4%, while their odds of winning it all were only 5.3%. For comparison, FanGraphs pretty much guaranteed the Phillies making the Postseason, with a 99.4% chance, and their chances of taking home the Commissioner's Trophy were over double what the Mets were projected at, sitting at 11.8%.
The Mets' newest young trio could turn their postseason tide in a big way.
Since McLean's promotion, the Mets have called up a fellow top pitching prospect in the form of Jonah Tong. Tong has only made one start thus far, but it went about as well as one could ask for. The young right-hander tossed five innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out six opponents. He also didn't allow a single walk.
The Mets' projections improved dramatically from the time of McLean's first start to the day before Tong's first outing. They improved their projected win rate to .543, and their Postseason odds made a massive jump to 95%. They've nearly caught up to the Phillies in their chance of winning the World Series. The Phillies' odds have dropped to 8.5%, while the Mets' odds have increased to 7%.
Now, the Mets are calling upon their next top pitching prospect, Brandon Sproat. While the former second-round pick got off to a sluggish start to the year, posting a 6.02 ERA and 16.6% K% through the end of May, he has turned things around significantly. Since the beginning of June, he has had a 3.13 ERA while improving his K% to 25.7% over 74.2 innings pitched. The right-hander has also only allowed 0.60 HR per 9 innings.
We shall see how this affects the Mets' odds. Their win total projection, odds of making the playoffs, and chances of winning the World Series have all gone up slightly since Tong's debut. Now that Sproat is in the mix, it's definitely possible we see another uptick, especially when it comes to their World Series odds.
