Brewers injuries make these NY Mets players a match for a Milwaukee trade return

The ex-Brewers duo makes more sense to go back to Milwaukee by August 3.

The Milwaukee Brewers have had a stranglehold on the NL Central for most of the season and appear ready to, at worst, host their first playoff game. Some recent injuries, however, have given them some needs the New York Mets could help them with.

Brandon Woodruff is done for the year. Sal Frelick’s timetable has yet to be determined, but he has landed on the IL.

In an ironic twist, the Mets have two players who could help fill both of these needs. Each came to New York via Milwaukee.

All of a sudden, Freddy Peralta and Tyrone Taylor make a lot more sense for the Brewers

Freddy Peralta and his 4.66 ERA isn’t going to bring the Mets everything they dreamed he could if they were to sell. But if there’s one team who should believe they can “fix” him, it’s the Brewers. Peralta was fifth in the Cy Young race last year with Milwaukee. Before the Mets, it’s the only big league team he knew.

This would be one of the stranger twists of the last 365 days in the sport. The Brewers sold Peralta in the offseason despite a $8 million contract while unwisely issuing Woodruff the qualifying offer which he accepted. Paid over $22 million to give them only 9 starts but a good performance this year, the Brewers falsely believed the oft-injured Woodruff could stay on the field. It was a fine choice to issue him the QO if they didn’t operate on such a tight budget.

Less ironic would be the Mets trading Tyrone Taylor back to the Brewers. Acquired before the 2024 season, he’d be an affordable addition Milwaukee already knows about. Frelick has only a .630 OPS this season. Taylor has hit more home runs in his part-time role and went into Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a superior .659 OPS prior to hitting another home run.

Taylor isn’t a direct one-for-one swap for Frelick on paper. What he could do is help stop some bleeding and give them a little more balance. If nothing else, he’ll pop some occasional homers and steal runs with his glove.

Milwaukee hasn’t gone for the jugular at the trade deadline in the past. Reuniting with Peralta and Taylor isn’t a killshot yet seems satisfactory enough to add depth and buy low on one player who should be much better as well as another who is showing signs he is with frequent enough playing time.
