4) Sean Reid-Foley
Sean Reid-Foley has now pitched in parts of four seasons for the Mets. Originally acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays, alongside two other players for Steven Matz, Reid-Foley logged his most innings in a Mets uniform in 2024, and the bottom line results were pretty decent. He had a 1.66 ERA, 2.80 FIP, and 1.25 WHIP. SRF allowed zero home runs, had a zero percent barrel rate, and struck out 27.8% of opponents.
Although Reid-Foley performed well, keep in mind this was in a small sample size of just 21.2 innings. Heading into 2024, he had a career ERA and FIP over 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.55. Despite strong numbers in 2024, SRF still handed out walks to 15.6% of opponents. He may have had a zero percent barrel rate but a sub-par 88.9 MPH exit velocity. His opponent BABIP was just .255, compared to his career average of .292.
It’s not as if SRF suddenly saw a massive uptick in stuff. He had a 91 Stuff+ mark and averaged out at 94.9 MPH with his four-seam fastball during his first three seasons in New York. Last year, his fastball averaged out at 95.2 MPH, and Stuff+ put him at 91 once again. The only significant change in pitch usage was he used his slider more often than his change-up.
Without a huge improvement or change in stuff, SRF’s 2024 small sample size may not be as promising as it seems. He still had a sub-4.00 xFIP (3.70) and SIERA (3.98), but it is still in a small sample size. Reid-Foley has yet to have an extended period of success and could be out the door by Memorial Day.
