3 NY Mets players whose early success feels like it has a nearing expiration date

All three were excellent from St. Lucie onward, but have hit a few recent bumps.

2) Huascar Brazoban

It wasn’t a good introduction to Huascar Brazoban last year. Acquired at the trade deadline, not necessarily for the purpose of putting them over the top but more so giving them depth, the team made the most of his remaining minor league options. When they needed to or just weren’t satisfied with his performance, Brazoban went to Syracuse.

Patience paid off. Never in danger of getting cut, the thought was Brazoban would compete for one of the final roster spots heading into Opening Day. Some injuries helped him make the team out of camp. Also aiding was how well he pitched in the spring.

Following his 5.14 ERA in 21 innings at the end of 2024, Brazoban showed up with much better results in the spring. His horrific 6 BB/9 rate in limited action for the Mets in 2025 didn’t fully evaporate. However, in 10.2 innings of preseason action, Brazoban logged a 1.69 ERA. He walked 6, struck out 14, and had a .184 batting average against him. Other than the walks, he looked excellent.

The spring training success continued throughout the regular season until recently. Now 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA, Brazoban is less of a standout performer and more of a hold your breath then hope for the best type of middle reliever. A combined 7 earned runs changed against him in 0.2 innings at the end of June in back-to-back outings now have all Mets fans on edge about what’s to come.
