The New York Mets aren’t keeping it secret because they can’t. They have pitching problems. It’s the personnel eating away at any chance of an easy solution. Three starters we trust, two spots up for grabs, the Mets have barely scratched the surface of what they need to stick with.
On April 19, the Mets put Tobias Myers on the mound to start the game. He tossed 2 shutout innings on 28 pitches before getting the hook. David Peterson came in after, pitched well over 3.2, and the game was ultimately lost by a combination of Craig Kimbrel, Devin Williams, and a lack of offense.
The Mets used Myers once more in their 10-8 win over the Minnesota Twins, subbing Christian Scott when he couldn’t get out of the second inning. It went better for Myers even with an earned run charged to him. It’s about time the Mets stick with him and see if the results can continue.
Why aren’t the Mets sticking with Tobias Myers in the rotation?
One reason could be the Mets don’t want a bullpen full of failed planned starters. Sean Manaea has a spoon to dig himself out from there. Kodai Senga may be one bad start away from joining him. There’s also David Peterson whose role is unknown at the moment.
Myers is great as a multi-inning threat in the bullpen. But when your relief corps is stacked with players who can throw multiple innings, Huascar Brazoban included, it becomes unnecessary.
Moving Myers to the rotation only solves half of the problem. There remains an open rotation spot with no answer. The bullpen will continue to have more longmen than they know what to do with. However, with Myers out and starting games, the Mets have one less multi-inning arm. Things are more organized. Most importantly, there might be something there with Myers in this adjusted role.
In his career, Myers is 8-7 with a 3.43 ERA in 32 career starts. This includes the one opener appearance he made with the Mets vs. Chicago. 25 of his 27 appearances as a rookie in 2024 came in this role. Some struggles last year in the role, with an ERA over 5.00, along with outstanding results in the bullpen had the Milwaukee Brewers keeping him in his more limited role.
The Mets have tried basically everything else. This is the next card to pull and let it take shape.
