This was more than misspeaking.

Isn’t the World Series supposed to include the best of the best? The best teams. The best players. The best umpiring crew. The best commentary…the last one tends to fail the most. John Smoltz hasn’t exactly built himself a Hall of Fame career in the booth with FOX. in Game One between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, he made the kind of mistake that shows he was ill-prepared for the moment, insisting one of the most important players on the Brewers was familiar to him from his days as a member of the New York Mets.

Trevor Megill got the final three outs of the game, allowing a run across but holding a lead. Smoltz, with perfect precision, made the most predictable faux pas he could have.

Mistakes happen. This is such a simple one that shows you didn’t do a lick of additional research.

John Smoltz confusing Trevor Megill and Tylor Megill had social media abuzz

This was no slip of the tongue. It was a genuine MLB broadcast version of thinking something entirely different. As fans watched and looked on in horror, they couldn’t believe he could make a mistake like this deep into the playoffs when he had already been following the Brewers.

The mistake was Smoltz’s biggest and most obvious blunder of the night. Routinely called out by the fans, another X user found it ironic how much praise Smoltz had for Jacob Misiorowski’s mechanics while hating on analytics moments later.

Smoltz, apparently, doesn’t realize the analytics are the numbers behind things like extension and release height.

The mistake is hardly Smoltz’s first error in the booth. At this year’s All-Star Game he said the Chicago Cubs led the NL Central when they didn’t and claimed the Texas Rangers were a bad first-half team in 2023 when they weren’t.

How does he keep getting away with it? If you Google “John Smoltz mistake” it’s mostly about an error card where he and Tom Glavine had a face-swap back in 1990. It buys into the same theory had Disney renamed Frozen from The Ice Princess so whenever people Googled “Disney Frozen” they stopped coming up with conspiracy theory stories about what happened to Walt’s head.

There’s no room for error in the World Series. Brewers fans noticed Smoltz’s mistake. So did Mets fans. As did the majority of fans who have any clue about either Megill brother. The Rays did lose Game One but it also feels like Smoltz took the bigger L.

Nobody expects Smoltz to know information about every single player across the league on the fly. At minimum, he should have a clear idea of who's participating in the game he's watching and the ones he has been following. To err is to be human. There is no doubt Smoltz is made of flesh and blood.
