Chris Devenski to the Phillies

There were a couple of other Mets to consider to finish this list off. Chris Devenski feels like someone who could be a nice cheap match for the Phillies in free agency. He doesn’t move the needle or cause much controversy at the onset of signing with Philadelphia. Already an ex-Phillies player who appeared in 3 games back in 2022, it would be a vengeful sort of reunion against the Mets who seemed to under-utilize his services.

A 2.16 ERA in 16.2 innings for the Mets this past year, Devenski played nicely by accepting minor league assignments multiple times. When he did test free agency, no one nibbled. He returned to the Mets on a new deal and continued to accept minor league assignments as needed.

This offseason’s Mets free agents didn’t win over a lot of fans. Each acquired at the trade deadline was a rental whom an argument could be made about letting go. Tyler Rogers is someone the Phillies could consider. Even Griffin Canning could get a call to see if what he did in his limited time with the Mets was real. After all, if they’re going to lose Suarez to the Mets, there may be some room available for him. Somehow, Devenski going to the Phillies and playing well might sting the most because of how under-the-radar he was for the Mets this past year.

There shouldn’t be a great sense of anyone other than Alonso ending up with the Phillies after departing from the Mets. Even he seems like a greater longshot to end up in Philadelphia than many other cities.
