Pete Alonso to the Phillies

How would this work? Don’t the Phillies have Bryce Harper under contract until the year 3000? Just last winter, he was willing to move back to the outfield if it meant the Phillies brought Pete Alonso to the City of Brotherly Love.

The circumstances clear up even more if Schwarber leaves. It would be inconceivable for either NL East team to end up with both sluggers. However, a swap is viable. It would be a step back for each organization to lose their best power hitter without finding a replacement of some kind.

The Phillies could split time at DH between Alonso, Harper, and others. Left field will be relatively open. And if they can find a taker for Nick Castellanos who can’t help but talk his way into getting on the wrong side of the fans, so does right field.

Frankly, it makes the most sense for both teams to retain their star sluggers. Familiarity but also positional fit seems to make it the best direction for each ball club to go. There’s always a chance each ends up leaving the NL East entirely. But that’s a different discussion for another day.
