The New York Mets concluded their series with the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park on Wednesday by completing a comeback that led to a 6-5 victory, and thus taking two out of three games. The biggest spark of the comeback was from Pete Alonso, who hit a game-tying three-run home run in the eighth inning. That, along with other recent big hits, is how he is taking away any critiques Mets fans have with him.

Prior to Alonso hitting the home run, the Mets were down 4-1 after lots of shaky defense that put them in the deficit. The team also went three for 16 with runners in scoring position. After the home run, that's when things were going in the right direction. The team got some better defense that included a couple of outs at the plate, and with the game going up to 11 innings, they were able to score two runs, which all led to the win.
It wasn't just the Alonso home run on Wednesday that has been helping the team win so far in 2025. He had an RBI double in the first inning that got the Mets on the board early. Also, in Game 1 of the three-game series on Monday, he hit a grand slam that helped lead the team to a 10-4 win. All of these big hits Alonso recorded either gave the Mets the lead or a tie. They also came in situations with runners on base.
Mets fans were annoyed that Alonso wasn't doing a lot offensively in recent seasons, and he got off to a slow start this season before the Marlins series. The lack of offensive production was mainly why the annoyance of Mets fans increased throughout the years he has been on the team. He had struggled to get the big hit in crucial situations. However, with six games already played in 2025 and a positively impactful Marlins series, he appears to have settled down the annoyances of fans.
With a 2-year, $54 million contract acquired in the offseason, Alonso needs to continue showing how clutch he is at the plate. If he does, his performances will be worth every penny of that contract.
