Mets owner Steve Cohen can save baseball fans from sickening Dodgers rumors
Baseball fans suffered a collective burst of acid reflux seeing these Dodgers rumors that Steve Cohen can put a big red X through.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are two wins away from a World Series victory while the New York Mets sit at home ready for what’s next. Even with the focus of their franchise being the sharpening of knives to end the New York Yankees season, we get some sickening Dodgers rumors about an offseason pursuit of Juan Soto.
Delivered courtesy of the NY Post’s Jon Heyman, the World Series travel day wasn’t a quiet one for baseball fans hoping to see their team make Soto an offer. The Yankees with him already in tow are one of the candidates as are the Mets whose billionaire owner Steve Cohen can play hero to more than just those who bleed orange and blue.
Cohen took over the Mets with a fear he’d do exactly what the Dodgers have. As close to a super team as one could envision occurring in Los Angeles, it’s their maneuvering around the Shohei Ohtani contract with a deferred payment that had them becoming the biggest heels in baseball.
A paycheck for Juan Soto from Mets owner Steve Cohen is suddenly an outcome many fans may wish to see
The rich getting richer is not something most average fans would sign up for. Rich, at least in this sense, isn’t about money but instead talent on the field. Soto going to the Dodgers shouldn’t shock anyone. They’ve been in on every major free agent. It’s only natural they’d at least look into signing Soto whose generational talent would only make them a bigger threat to win a championship.
As Heyman notes, Soto’s next destination is a bit different from that of a player like Ohtani who preferred the West Coast. A common thought with Soto is his preference being to suit up for a club on the East Coast. If this is the dagger to end these disgusting Dodgers rumors, many fans of teams who aren’t in on him would willingly sign up to see him end up with the Mets instead.
The Mets did manage to do something quite impressive this past year. They became less of a joke and more of a fun-loving franchise. Rivals of theirs might think the Grimace shtick was exhausting. Even those who cheer for the Mets might have felt by the end of the year many of the gimmicks outwore their welcome.
Ask the majority of baseball fans where they’d like to see Soto sign and they’re likely to pick their own team. Among the realistic destinations, how can someone other than a Mets hater not want to see him get paid by Cohen? The Dodgers and Yankees are the supervillains of the sport. Seeing them with Soto for the next decade feels a little too much like the biggest bully in high school getting nominated prom king.
This MLB offseason will focus heavily on where Soto eventually signs. To see the Dodgers emerge as a real possibility days before they might win a championship with an already fully-loaded roster should have Cohen grabbing a blank check and a cape to become the hero to stop it.
