Alexander Canario hasn’t done enough to make the Opening Day roster under any circumstance
There was a thought the Mets acquired Alexander Canario in a trade with the Chicago Cubs as insurance in case Starling Marte wasn’t ready for the start of the season. He seems like he is on track to be available. The same goes for Brandon Nimmo who, at worst, might need to DH. Whatever the situation is, Canario hasn’t taken advantage of the playing time the Mets have given him.
The seemingly savvy pickup is 3 for 22 this spring with 10 strikeouts. He hasn’t driven in a run since his Mets debut on March 1 despite some regular playing time. It has been cut down recently with the Mets turning to their regulars a little more. The verdict may have already come in on Canario even in a situation where someone was to land on the IL before Opening Day.
Due to his age, there is a chance a team could claim Canario or even trade for him. There’s always something intriguing about a youthful player as opposed to one whose chapters have all been written. Any team that might acquire him via waivers would run into the same questions as we have. Is he really worth having on your major league roster? The Mets could always release him outright if they’re not buying into what he’s selling.
The Mets Opening Day roster could still have a few surprises for us. Final bullpen spots and even one of the position players is up for debate. Canario joined a roster with too many outfielders already. His only chance of making the team was for someone to be more hurt than they already were.
