Genesis Cabrera has pitched his way out of an Opening Day roster spot
The sample size of a relief pitcher is far too minimal to draw any major conclusions. That’s why when Genesis Cabrera had one bad recent outing we didn’t scream until our lungs bled about why he still had a locker at Clover Field. We know the deal with Cabrera. Signed to a minor league deal with an invite to camp, the hope is he can provide the Mets with lefty reliever depth later on this season while not necessarily joining the club for the first game of the year.
The fact that Cabrera signed so quickly in the offseason might suggest he is open to the idea of pitching his way back to the majors again. It’s not as if he came to “settle” on a contract late in the offseason because offers weren’t coming in. Although an opportunity to opt out may arise before Opening Day, we should have some hopes he is satisfied enough with his current situation to stick around.
A seasoned veteran reliever we thought could outpace Danny Young for a roster spot, Cabrera recently saw his chances of making the team flash before his eyes. His 8.31 ERA cannot be ignored even if a small sample won’t allow him to improve it much at all. Perhaps more useful down the line for New York, one bad day on the mound can and probably has crashed his stock.
