Honorable Mentions

Rene Rivera was in the NY Mets 2017 Opening Day lineup in place of the often-injured Travis d’Arnaud. By August of that year, Rivera had been put on waivers and ultimately claimed by the Chicago Cubs. Rivera had a career as a backup catcher that would span 13 MLB destinations including three different stops with the Mets along the way.

Ken Henderson was traded by the Texas Rangers to the New York Mets on March 15, 1978, and was in their Opening dDay lineup. The Mets quickly realized that Henderson wasn't the solution to their problems and after only seven games, traded him to the Cincinnati Reds for relief pitcher Dale Murray.

If there is anything to learn from all of this, it's that you may believe that making your team’s Opening Day lineup has made all your dreams come true, wait, hold on, rent - don’t buy, because there’s no telling what tomorrow may bring.

As the baseball great Satchel Paige once said, "Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you."
