NY Mets are one player away from setting a franchise record

In 2025, the New York Mets set an MLB record with the most pitchers used in a single season. They called up 46 different players to throw a ball from the mound to home plate at least once. Some were limited to only a single appearance. Others were position players asked to throw in a blowout. The record stands as the most overfilled pitching staff in the history of the sport.

The record won’t be broken in 2026, however, the team can set a franchise high with one roster move. Through 156 games, the Mets have used 64 different players in a game. It is tied for the 2021 season as the most they have written onto the lineup card.

It hasn’t always been pretty. Four pitchers appeared in only one game. Matt Seelinger, Kevin Herget, Dylan Ross, and Guillo Zuniga all had a single game logged. The position players cycled through much less, but we still have Gabriel Arias with 2 games and Andy Ibanez with 3 falling behind the rest.

None particularly impactful and some already gone from the organization, many weren’t necessarily thought of as temporary fixtures.

Filing roles had a lot to do with such a high number. Eric Wagaman, Christopher Morel, Tommy Pham, and Austin Slater all had a tryout as the team’s right-handed specialist to hit lefty pitching. We can include Ibanez on the list, too.

The pitching is far more understandable with the way the game is played and all of the players who were traded away at the deadline. Early roster cuts Luis Garcia and Richard Lovelady gave the Mets two early holes to fill up. Before we knew it, the rotating door within the Mets bullpen was opening up for an onslaught of fresh arms every couple of days.

Countless roster moves aren’t a David Stearns specialty. Their 6 seasons with the most players used all came in the last 6 seasons, albeit not all in a row.

What are the odds it happens? The 40-man roster already has Cameron Weston and Christian Cairo on it who have yet to appear in a game for the Mets. It could make sense for at least Weston to log an inning with the minor league season wrapped up. When he or someone else does get into a game, the record is set.

As for the MLB record, that's a little out of reach. The 2024 Miami Marlins and 2025 Baltimore Orioles set that mark.
