How much do statistics matter through 8 games? Depending on what they are, some will carry more weight than others. Surely, the craziest New York Mets statistic of the year so far isn’t even up for debate. In honor of former big league catcher Evan Gattis who had an unprecedented 11 triples in 2015 and only 12 in his entire career, Jesse Winker has been off to the races with a pair of three- base hits already.
Winker is much slower than his build would suggest. His 14 stolen bases last season account for the majority of them in his career. Even as a young player for the Cincinnati Reds, he never stole more than a bag a season. He has only 17 for his career and didn’t even attempt one stolen base with the Mets in 2024 nor should we expect him to try all that often this year.
He might not get his chance with all of the triples. Two already, Winker leads MLB in the last statistic you’d expect him to.
An already MLB fluke has Mets DH Jesse Winker leading the majors in triples
Why spread out the craziness when you can do it all in one night? If you bet the over on 0.5 triples for Winker on Saturday, I hope the payout doubled with his pair of trips around the bases over to third.

JESSE WINKER TIES THE GAME WITH A TWO-RUN TRIPLE! pic.twitter.com/RVwwo9EAi2
Winker effectively made George Springer look the way we were told Juan Soto would appear in right field. Two somewhat playable balls, if not ones that could have been handled better, give us this anomaly.
Last year, Winker ranked among some of the lowest non-catchers in sprint speed. He is truly a DH in that sense.
The pair of triples puts him in a tie in Mets history with Mike Piazza who had two triples his entire Mets tenure. Both came in 2002. The amazing thing about Piazza, who had 8 triples in his entire career, is that somehow in the 5 games he played for the Florida Marlins, the future Hall of Famer managed a three-base hit. It was his lone hit for extra-bases in a Marlins uniform adding to the strange week he spent in Miami.
Is there a more unexpected Mets league leader at this point of the 2025 season? Of note, the only other place they lead is Edwin Diaz with 2 wild pitches, sometimes an equally as impossible to predict statistic as the triple.
