These Mets offseason twists wouldn't have us upset that Soylent Green is made of people.

2) The Mets trade David Peterson for a better, less controllable, and/or more expensive starting pitcher

The Mets rotation is fuller than full and the only way to possibly add someone of substance would be to subtract a member. They aren’t going to cut anyone. The only trade candidate who’d make much sense at all would be David Peterson. Tylor Megill isn’t as intriguing as he is. At a lower cost and with two years of control remaining, someone could view Peterson as a buy high candidate and replacement for whichever pitcher they might send over to the Mets.

There hasn’t been a whiff of a rumor about this happening which makes it an even wilder outcome for the team. But it could make sense for a team like the San Diego Padres or Seattle Mariners hoping to lower their payroll with starting pitching they could deal away. Swap Dylan Cease or Luis Castillo for David Peterson and a little more. The Mets improve their rotation. The other team involved sheds payroll and has an immediate replacement.

A productive albeit lucky and sometimes near disastrous year from Peterson should have us questioning if he’ll be anything like he was in 2024 again in 2025. Pitching is expensive in all aspects this offseason. If the Mets were to get anything in exchange for him, a guaranteed top of the rotation arm would be the type of player to get.
