A good twist ending can make an otherwise average film one you never forget. Baseball fans aren’t as onboard with twists. We like our teams to make the best moves possible which rarely seems to include something off the beaten path. The New York Mets signing Juan Soto, for instance, was hardly some sort of a twist. This was a long-awaited Best Picture nominee the fans had been waiting to see hit theaters.
The Mets offseason hasn’t been completely void of some twists. Clay Holmes as a starting pitcher? Who predicted that in June? As they try to build the best team possible, these far out offseason twists aren’t so outrageous even if they may require a few other dominoes to fall.
1) Blue Jays sign Pete Alonso and trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Mets
Here’s a twist for two teams. In anticipation of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. pricing himself out of Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays sign his replacement, Pete Alonso. In doing so, they trade Guerrero to the Mets who now feel the need to go after the next big free agent. Of course, for this to be something to even consider, the Mets will need to almost immediately extend the young superstar.
Fans in Toronto and New York would be left shook. Blue Jays fans would justify how Alonso is cheaper and the savings would allow them to spend on other needs. Mets fans would be over the moon as long as Guerrero isn’t merely a rental. The Mets aren’t an “all chips in the center” type of team at the moment. Sustained success is what they prefer and a trade for Guerrero without the guarantee of keeping him under contract beyond one year wouldn’t be so wise.
The first base market has been one of the wilder ones all offseason. A game of musical chairs has been played with multiple players and teams. Trades, free agent signings, and position changes have made it one of the more difficult positions to predict from Seattle down to Miami and San Diego up to Boston.
Too many big things would need to happen for this twist to take place. A more sensible ending that keeps Alonso in Queens would be fine with most fans.
