3) Jacob deGrom
When deGrom pitched, it was an event. He was truly an ace. He didn’t last as long with the Mets, and he certainly didn’t earn as many decisions, but what he did accomplish was just amazing.
Tom Seaver went 198-124 with a 2.57 ERA and WHIP of 1.076 in his 12 seasons with the Mets. He struck out 2,541 batters, an average of 7.5 per nine innings.
Doc Gooden went 157-85 with a 3.10 ERA and WHIP of 1.175 in his 11 seasons with the Mets. He struck out 1,875 batters, an average of 7.8 per nine innings.
Jacob deGrom spent nine years with the Mets. He went 82-57 with a 2.52 ERA and WHIP of 0.998. He struck out 1,607 batters, an average of 10.9 per nine innings.
Nobody could ever be Tom Seaver. But deGrom came awfully close. And while deGrom dominated for the majority of his time with the club, Gooden dominated in one season, MAYBE two.
Seaver deserved to have his number IMMEDIATELY retired and his statue was long overdue. And if Gooden got HIS number up there, then certainly deGrom is worthy of the same.
deGrom last wore his No. 48 in 2022 and, although someone was assigned the number in spring training of 2023, it has not been worn in a regular season game since. And well it shouldn’t. It SHOULD be up there with Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Dwight Gooden.
