Amazin Day couldn’t have taken place on a better day. Near what feels like the end of the Pete Alonso negotiations, New York Mets fans let Steve Cohen know how they really felt. Chants of “We want Pete!” rang out. Instead of his wallet doing the talking, Cohen used a microphone and delivered an important message that, in his own words, was going to be “brutally honest.”
This is a side of Cohen we don’t always see. Charitable and fan-friendly to extremes, he told it like it really is in front of fans who might have been expecting to hear a token answer. Cohen didn’t dodge any bullets. He told it like it really is. Frankly, this feels like the end of the Third Act.
Mets owner Steve Cohen has accepted life without Pete Alonso if the other side doesn’t budge
Cohen didn’t get to where he is by playing nice. He’s a businessman, first and foremost. We just don’t get to see that side of him quite as much in the baseball world.
How he was able to diffuse the fans chanting for a return of Alonso was remarkable. It shows how trusted and beloved he is even by those who may disagree with the direction of the team. Best of all, he didn’t completely move on from the idea of an Alonso return. He put the onus on that side to be reasonable.
Cohen is the kind of owner who seems to truly “get it” more than ever. He is involved without meddling. In the past, this might not have always been the case. He seems to have bought in completely with what David Stearns is building. He’s preaching patience for the plan.
Alonso doesn’t seem to be a necessary part of this plan. Continually, Cohen and Stearns have called Boras’ bluff. This time, in a public space in front of fans, we officially know how that side of the contract talks truly feel. The ball has continually bounced right back into Boras' court. Let's just hope this doesn't get awkward if Pete is back.
