The first week of November generally doesn’t have a whole lot of baseball news. The excitement of the offseason is a little nearer this year with the impending MLB lockout. This means we could have a resolution with Tarik Skubal sooner than later. The New York Mets will remain one of the top suitors until they’ve been officially eliminated.

Outside of the Skubal to the Mets speculation, there are plenty of other happenings around the Mets both related to the team and outside elements.

SNY just deleted a big part of the Mets culture

Whatever you think of the talent of the personalities on SNY, no one wants to see someone lose a job. It’s crucial. It’s unfair. This is what happened on Friday almost at random as it was announced SNY would be undergoing mass layoffs. It still exists with Baseball Night in New York and Sportsnite now cancelled. The website has essentially turned into a nothing burger with zero commentary on the Mets.

Per a source provided to The Athletic, ““The website is pivoting from a content-driven site to a promotional and informational platform.”

Sounds boring!

SNY staff has been able to provide some of the best Mets content whether we agreed or not. It’s a shameful way to end like this.

Robert Stock is the latest Mets player to get a split contract

Robert Stock is staying with the Mets (for now) as they’ve decided to make him the latest player to get a split contract. The logic is simple here and has become a hallmark trade of David Stearns. Stock gets a higher than average salary while in the minor leagues which will incentivize him to stay when the team does DFA him. If he elects free agency after getting DFA’d, he loses the contract. If he accepts a minor league assignment after passing through waivers, he retains both the minor league and major league salary.

Of course, there is no guarantee Stock would pass through waivers. The Mets tried this with Richard Lovelady last offseason. He ended up claimed by the Washington Nationals anyway.

The deal at least provides Stock with some assurance of loyalty from the Mets with a greater reason to stay put.

Tom Hanks is the Mets pitching coach, in a movie

Mets and Philadelphia Phillies fans had fun this week with the fake players and banners at Citi Field for the filming of a new Tom Hanks movie. Titled “The Comebacker,” it’s about a pitching coach (Hanks) whose life becomes upended when one of the Mets pitchers gets hit with a line drive. That’s all we’ve got.

The production turned Citi Field into a fantasy world where fictional players like Denny Clark, August Botwin, and Damon Londo have taken up real estate in our minds.
