The big news of the day for the New York Mets on Friday wasn’t Francisco Lindor batting clean-up. Rather, it was the man who made that lineup, Andy Green. Green stepped down from the front office and into the dugout to become the team’s interim manager. Carlos Mendoza is gone and Green will temporarily handle the reigns in what essentially feels like a Marshall Law type of move of David Stearns philosophy.
The Green era has started 0-1 with the Mets dropping their seventh straight and first against the Philadelphia Phillies in a home series at Citi Field. Aside from Mendoza going out and Green coming in, there were a few more noteworthy happenings around this ball club.
Jared Young silenced the Pete Alonso chants for a night
Pete Alonso wasn’t present for any of the games this week, but we heard his name multiple times. Poor Mark Vientos. He’s never going to hear the end of this. On multiple occasions, his bad defense had fans calling for the guy he replaced.

This wasn’t the case on Friday. Along with driving in the only Mets run of the night, Jared Young shined defensively. There were no demands for a Polar Bear in Flushing. Young wasn’t about to let fans stuck in the past, trying to twist the knife into the offseason decision-making harder, have one more mention of Alonso’s name: at least not yet.

Just as it seems we’ve always seen the last of Vientos at first base, the Mets go ahead and put him back there. Young continues to get hidden from lefties so on Sunday when they go against Jesus Luzardo, prepare yet again for a rehash of what happened against the Cubs.
Albert Pujols discussed his desire to manager the Mets
We know the plan isn’t for Green to remain the Mets manager. Who will take over eventually? The hot name is Albert Pujols.

When someone named Pujols wants to join you, you hope the first name is Albert and if it is, you have to consider it. However intriguing as it may be, fans don’t seem as eager about it as he does. Zero games of MLB managerial experience is one of the leading reasons. None of the recent rookie Mets managers have done well enough. Each has, in their own way, been passive.
Pujols won’t be getting hired anytime soon and with the Los Angeles Angels firing their GM and having just a one-year contract with their rookie manager, Kurt Suzuki, one has to wonder if they end up revising their offseason plans and hire Pujols instead. One constant question by fans in regards to Pujols on social media seems to be why him over Carlos Beltran?
There’s no trade value left for MJ Melendez
A quiet roster move by the Mets on a loud day was the demotion of MJ Melendez. Tyrone Taylor was activated and with the choice between Melendez or Eric Wagaman, the Mets decided to stick with the guy actually hitting.
After starting his season hitting .345 at the end of April, Melendez has put together consecutive months of batting .128 and .159. His 34.7% K rate is worse than his career total. Even at his best, Melendez was hammering hits around punchouts. We will probably only see him in a Mets uniform again merely to fill out a 26-man roster. Post-trade deadline, if nobody nibbles, is a time to test this controllable player out and maybe get him hot for an offseason trade.
I’m hearing the Tampa Bay Rays have a nice bag of balls they’d be willing to deal if Melendez can show some growth.
