There’s sports talk fodder created by NARPs (non-athletic regular people) and then there’s dropped hints by former NFL MVPs. Boomer Esiason of the WFAN Morning Show hinted on X last Thursday night that the New York Mets news we were all waiting for was about to come to a conclusion on Friday. He was asked gently by his colleagues the following day to clarify if he had some information not all of us were privy to.
Boomer doubled-down, suggesting this wasn’t a fan talking or even a sports radio host. Having his “ear to the ground” makes it seem as if he knew something. Apparently, he didn’t. It’s Sunday and no updates on where Pete Alonso will sign.
Boomer Esiason is in for a 6am pummeling if Pete Alonso doesn’t re-sign with the Mets today
As much as we’d like a conclusion to Alonso today, Sunday, February 2, it’s going to be more fun to listen to how things go on Monday morning if the negotiations between the Mets and Alonso haven’t moved a yard. Esiason opened himself up to ridicule from others if the news didn’t become official on Friday. One day we can almost excuse. A full 48 hours and counting, either Esiason got bad intel or Scott Boras is Mac Jones’ uncle and didn’t take so kindly to comments Esiason has made in the past about him.
No significant updates have happened with Alonso since Boomer’s initial tweet (or are we calling them tariffs now?). The Toronto Blue Jays stand as the greatest competition while they seek to cut a deal with Alex Bregman as an alternative. Bregman has yet to back down from a long-term deal, unlike Alonso who came to his senses.
Former New York athletes turned radio hosts breaking huge news might seem outlandish in a world where Jeff Passan can’t go on a date without texting an agent and Jon Heyman gets yelled at every time he goes in for an MRI because he’s too busy giving out credit to “who had it first” 24 hours after the fact. However, back in 2019, it was former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber who was the first to share the most delightful news of all about the Mets over the last decade: the team was up for sale. Barber was a part of the CBS Sports Radio at the time, a sister station of WFAN. He’s now on the same station as Boomer in the afternoons.
A rare fumble by Esiason when it comes to breaking news, he should just be thankful he didn’t offer to empty anyone’s Navage Nasal Care system if he was wrong.
