Someone check for a hanging chad.

Baseball Hall of Fame ballots are coming out this time of year and one of the recent ones to make it to social media publicly was courtesy of Dan Gelston. A writer for AP News, he put together maybe the most disgusting ballot a New York Mets fan could ever imagine.

Yeah, it’s real. Gelston isn’t to Philadelphia what Mark Gooden is to New York. His vote counts and it’s perplexing how one could have a vote when a quick look through his X profile shows where the bias lies.

A clear Philadelphia sports fan, voting for no one other than Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley is enough to question the thought process behind this. Somehow he left Cole Hamels off.

This is an impossible Baseball Hall of Fame ballot to justify whether you root for the Mets or anyone else

Voting for Rollins and Utley is okay. Let’s be clear. Rollins is far less a Hall of Fame candidate with Utley feeling more borderline at best. Worse players have gotten in. To claim the pair of Phillies teammates are the only ones worthy on the ballot this year is ludacris. It’s not even about Carlos Beltran whose involvement with the 2017 Houston Astros might still have some voters feeling sour grapes toward him. How do you leave off Andruw Jones?

The funny thing is the ballot doesn’t even include a vote for Bobby Abreu whose career numbers reflect more closely to Hall of Fame worthy than Rollins. Much less popular in Philadelphia largely because he was on losing teams, this ballot feels like a love letter to the 2008 Phillies.

Rollins is more on-par with David Wright. The arguments for and against differ. Rollins stayed healthy, won a championship, and even secured an MVP. Wright’s problem was injury. It’s fair to not vote for him. But again, how do you toss him onto your ballot and leave off Andruw Jones???

At the moment, Beltran and Jones are the only ones above the required 75% threshold and only are by a small percentage. If neither gets in, it’s going to be a weird class of only Jeff Kent. Talk about a light crowd in Cooperstown if he’s the headliner. Kent didn’t spend enough time with any single team to draw a large enough following. While he won an MVP with the San Francisco Giants, do we believe enough fans will travel to welcome him in?

Everyone is entitled to their vote. When made public, it’s open to judgment. This ballot needs the book thrown at it.
