The New York Mets were featured on MLB Network yesterday with Greg Amsinger sharing a list of the most beloved players in the franchise’s history. It started off with the unquestioned number one choice, Tom Seaver. In second was Dwight Gooden but it probably should have been David Wright. In either case, the list continued on with many of the players you’d expect.
Hall of Famers, players with retired numbers, guys still connected with the franchise closely were all mentioned. Then came the final choice at number nine. Pete Alonso.
Is Alonso one of the most beloved Mets players of all-time? As much as we adored him at times, Francisco Lindor has already passed him. The absence of Jacob deGrom from the list is pure pandemonium. Who made this list, Scott Boras?
As beloved of a Mets player as he is, Pete Alonso isn’t in the top 9 or 10 of all-time
Chants of “we want Pete” at Amazin Day over the weekend must have scored him higher on this list than he deserved. Last year’s struggles definitely put him in the doghouse while wearing a shock collar more often than he ever did in the past. While opinions still may vary, he is neither one of the nine most beloved or popular Mets players of all-time.
Beloved is certainly a complicated word. Incredibly important figures such as Jerry Koosman, Carlos Beltran, Bud Harrelson, and others didn’t make the cut. None are quite there among the most beloved or appreciated even if one has his number retired already, another is Hall of Fame bound, and the third was one of the early most popular position players the franchise had.
The exclusion of deGrom is what’s most suspicious about the list. There must be a false narrative out there about Mets fans hating him for leaving. That’s simply not the case. He remains one of the most beloved players to ever wear the team’s uniform even if things didn’t end as planned.
Alonso has been mentioned plenty of places like MLB Network this offseason. On a list of the 9 most beloved Mets of all-time, it’s a place he doesn’t need to be mentioned. If it wasn’t for this tinfoil hat to protect me from such wild thoughts, I’d accuse Boras of disguising himself as an intern and putting the graphic together.
