There are two sides to the Pete Alonso argument. One says the New York Mets should have kept him. The other says they should have let him go.
Which side did you choose?
If you think the Mets are better off with him, you’re right. Those in the camp across the lake are just as correct in their way of thinking. Whichever narrative you want to push has the evidence to back it up.
You’re right about Pete Alonso regardless of which side of the line your opinion lands
You think the Mets were right to let Alonso walk away on a five-year deal worth $155 million? Yeah. You were right. That’s a lot of dough and not something the Mets needed or should have tried to match. The way in which they may have approached Alonso is up for debate. Never receiving a formal offer from the Mets, Alonso didn’t have much of a choice.
Then there are those who wanted Alonso back in a Mets uniform. Your argument is based on what has happened at first base. Until Jared Young’s return from the IL, the situation has been incredibly weak with Mark Vientos reminding us all that he never was a top prospect nor was the 2024 campaign the real deal.
Alonso recently crept over the .250 mark with his batting average and a recent home run surge has him projecting toward a 35 home run season or so and 100 RBI. Available every day for the Baltimore Orioles as well, Alonso is doing what so many of the Mets offseason additions haven’t accomplished and that’s get his uniform on for a game.
Rarely has a player been and will remain as highly debated as Alonso. Popular amongst fans and legendary within the organization’s history, an often anemic Mets lineup in 2026 will have fans tearing each other apart in every way possible until there is a clear and proven replacement. It’s unbelievable that there was a point when Alonso and Vientos were being compared to each other with the point being that they were equals.
The Mets both need a player like Alonso right now and can’t be fully blamed for trying something else. So whichever aisle you’re sitting on, feel confident that you’ve chosen the correct seat. The grass isn’t green on either side. It’s more off-yellow.
