4) Calling up Christian Scott ahead of schedule
The Mets have held back a lot of their top prospects. How many of their younger players felt overdue for a big league promotion when they finally did arrive? One exception is Christian Scott. Promoted in the first week of May 2024, Scott’s arrival was our first chance to see the young-up-and-coming pitching prospects beginning to make a name for themselves. Scott’s early arrival was a pleasant treat. Sadly, it didn’t work out so well for a couple of reasons.
Scott was definitely premature. In 9 starts, Scott finished 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA. He looked good at times, overmatched in other appearances. It would have been good for him to get a full year under his belt to work out some of those growing pains. Then came the big problem: Tommy John surgery.
Stearns is scott free (no pun intended) of any criticism here. This wasn’t a case of pushing a pitcher further than he should have. The season was young. The Mets needed the innings.
Nevertheless, this is one of those welcomed decisions by the Mets that backfired because the universe didn’t grow up in Queens. The setback eliminated Scott from pitching at all in 2025. The only silver lining is it paved the way for us to get a glimpse of some of the other youngsters. However, like they have with too many, they seemed to arrive later than we needed.
