2) Trading for Jose Siri
Believe it or not, the trade for Jose Siri was actually pretty well-received. Silly us! A high-energy outfielder who can run, hit for power, and steal balls hit in the gaps was welcomed to the Mets especially when the cost was only Eric Orze.
Somehow, this turned out to be one of the worst deals of all made by Stearns. It rewarded them with barely anything at all, Siri missing most of the year and performing poorly when he was healthy briefly at the beginning of the season and again at the end.
What was meant to be a battle between Siri and Tyrone Taylor for time in center field turned into a puzzle for the Mets they couldn’t figure out. Sans Siri, Taylor was asked to play a lot more than desired. The Mets were forced to move Jeff McNeil into center field regularly while they awaited Siri’s return from the IL.
The injury was out of Stearns’ control. However, with Siri not even making it through the end of the season on the MLB roster when he was DFA’d in September, we can consider this a massive failure of a roster addition. And to think, we all thought “what’s the worst that could happen?” and got exactly that.
