5) Luisangel Acuna
We’re going to do things a little differently with Luisangel Acuna. He can play either middle infield position. Is he actually going to start? Maybe. But perhaps he’d interest ball clubs who didn’t steal a whole lot of bases last year. Let’s look at some of those clubs.
Athletics - Just 80 stolen bases (27th in MLB) last year and some room for improvement at second base, we can find a logical way for Acuna to fit in. There probably isn’t a good one-for-one swap to immediately help out the Mets in an Acuna deal. As part of a package, Acuna might help.
Giants - The San Francisco Giants had a lousy second base situation last year and should remain in the hunt for improvements this offseason. They also happened to steal only 68 bases (29th in MLB) which furthers the case to acquire a player like Acuna to add some speed to the roster. Because of the ballpark they play in, the Giants need to think about what works well for them to be a winning team. Power isn’t it. Good defense and speed alongside top pitching is what can make them elite.
Tigers - With only 61 stolen bases, no one stole fewer bases than the Tigers last year. Gleyber Torres is back at second base on the qualifying offer. At shortstop last year they had Trey Sweeney play regularly. He hit under .200. Even if Acuna isn’t actually starting, he gives the Tigers added depth up the middle.
