NY Mets Monday Morning GM: 5 free agents who make more sense after last week’s trade

Last week's Brandon Nimmo-Marcus Semien swap helped make these 5 free agents more sensible for the Mets for multiple reasons.

3) Alex Bregman

There actually isn’t a better free agent hitter out there who fits the Mets’ narrative than Alex Bregman. He’s a champion. He plays Gold Glove caliber third base. He can hit pretty well, too. He checks off every box other than coming on a short-term deal. Bregman instantly answers the question at third base. He improves the team dramatically and gives them an entirely new look.

It’s unlikely the Mets sign him and Valdez, especially with such a large vacancy in their outfield. To his benefit, there’s no longer a qualifying offer penalty shadowing him. There was no shot the Mets were going to add him and Juan Soto last offseason. This year, Bregman has no penalization leeching onto his back to jump up and surprise his new ball club at June’s draft. Sorry, no picks for you.

Bregman’s offensive numbers have dropped significantly from his peak seasons with the Houston Astros. Still, they’ve been some of the better ones among third basemen. He’s just no longer the MVP-caliber player he appeared to be early on. Trusting him for 20-25 home runs, 90+ RBI, and an OPS in the low .800s is what you can do. The steady defense at third base in a market without many options is what helps separate him further.
