Brandon Nimmo hasn’t been a member of the New York Mets for over a week now. What the heck happened to time? Fallout from the trade has been more speculative with the biggest piece of Mets news being that Francisco Lindor might have some empty chairs if he invited the whole team to his birthday party.
The Nimmo for Marcus Semien trade is significant as it completely alters what anyone could have predicted what the Mets would look like next year. Second base is now locked up. Left field is wide open. Run prevention has, indeed, been prioritized.
Some of these players may have made sense already for the Mets. You can fairly claim they make even more sense after the change from Nimmo to Semien.
1) Tyler Rogers
Tyler Rogers was already a strong consideration for the Mets. He was an effective pitcher after coming over at the trade deadline last summer. The only negative thing people could say about him is he wasn’t proficient at leaving inherited runners on base.
If used differently, Rogers could thrive. He’s a unique pitcher who relies on soft contact and ground balls. A Gold Glove second baseman matches this tendency well.
The big question with Rogers is whether or not the Mets are willing to pay what he could receive. Projected and predicted to make over $10 million, adding him would likely mean he’s the top non-closer they bring in this offseason. There’s a lack of flash with him, but how can one argue against it when he is one of the better relievers on the market?
With a lifetime 2.76 ERA, Rogers has been a consistent arm throughout his career showing no signs of slowing down and may actually benefit from pitching in a league where everyone is throwing flames. Improved defense on the infield makes all ground ball pitchers more sensible to acquire. This includes our next entrant who Mets fans aren’t so eager to see wear blue and orange.
