2) Trade Jonah Tong and more for Nick Pivetta, a reliever, and maybe even Ramon Laureano
Whatever happens, it seems definitive that the Mets and San Diego Padres will come to terms on some sort of a trade. The rumors are buzzing and with each club being able to help the other out financially and with personnel, it would be foolish for them to not come to terms on something. It doesn’t sound like Francisco Lindor or Fernando Tatis Jr. will change uniforms. More likely, a package with Jonah Tong as a headliner could head to San Diego for some immediate help.
Here’s where the tricky debate comes in. Are we ready to give up Tong, last year’s best minor league pitcher in baseball, for maybe Nick Pivetta, a reliever, and a wild card outfielder like Ramon Laureano? It would cost more than Tong. If you’re going to deal away a guy penciled in to become one of the most important parts of your rotation, you better be sure he’s not a future ace.
There are definitely trade packages the Mets can put together which won’t include Tong. Even Brandon Sproat is someone to be careful with. It is about timing, though, as well as clever self-scouting. The farm system is loaded with talented pitchers and there won’t be room for everyone.
Short of the inclusion of Mason Miller, it’s hard to justify giving up Tong who could very well do Nolan McLean things for the Mets down the stretch next year. His biggest contribution may not come until the 2027 season, though. He was out of his element in the majors last season and could use more time in Triple-A.
Something will go down between the Mets and Padres. How hard will our jaws hit the floor when it does?
