In an offseason of unpredictable moves, these are five the boldest things David Stearns could yank out of his playbook next.

The theme of this offseason for the New York Mets is that you’re batting under .100 with what you thought they would do. Retaining at least one of their star players in free agency, Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, seemed like a sure thing. Who really believed they were trading Brandon Nimmo away?

Your offseason predictions might be hitting as well as Bartolo Colon against everyone other than James Shields, but don’t fret. Predictions are made to be wrong.

Whether you’re happy or not with what the Mets have done so far, there’s room for some bold moves. These are five of the biggest and realistic ones they could give us next.

1) Sign Kyle Tucker to a long contract or even a short high AAV one

I mean, why not? They have a corner outfield vacancy. They were willing to pay Jorge Polanco $20 million a year. If Kyle Tucker doesn’t see a long contract offer this offseason, he’s a guy who should consider taking a shorter deal ala Alex Bregman or Alonso last winter.

A longer contract isn’t even out of the question although I’d doubt the Mets would pair him alongside Juan Soto as a pair of long and expensive contracts. Tucker is a far more realistic Mets match if he’s taking a high AAV without the years.

Coming off of a bit of a downer year where he had a worse OPS than Jorge Polanco (Mets fans were quick to point this out), the rationale is there for Tucker to rebuild his stock for a year or two or three. The biggest reason why the Mets might not take this approach is that signing Tucker would require them to sacrifice two draft picks plus another $1 million in international bonus slot money. Is a possible one-year grab worth the qualifying offer penalties?
