We’re only about two weeks post-World Series and already the plans the New York Mets had for the offseason have taken a detour. Updates on who’s available, who isn’t, and what’s going on with their own roster should have fans reconsidering a few things about where this team is headed.

Nothing has been etched in stone, but as the MLB offseason typically goes, things have shifted quickly.

1) The Mets aren’t getting Tarik Skubal and maybe not Freddy Peralta either

Every rumor seems to point at Tarik Skubal staying put in Detroit and the Milwaukee Brewers having only speculative interest in trading Freddy Peralta, recently downplayed by the front office. Both teams intend to contend in 2026. Why wouldn’t they do it with their best pitcher along for the ride?

We know better than to believe everything an owner or executive says. David Stearns is a master at saying nothing with a lot of words. When answering honestly, he owns the best pair of skates to salchow around the answer.

If not Skubal or Peralta, the Mets will have to turn their attention to any of the other perceived starting pitchers on the trade market. As wonderful as it is to think about, starting pitchers aren’t dealt in as much abundance as we like to think.

Most likely, the Mets end up adding via free agency. Interestingly enough, this could lead to them providing other starting pitcher-needy clubs with an arm. The Mets rotation needs an upgrade but also an available seat on the team plane. It’s a cause and effect. Because the Mets have inked a starting pitcher, they’re going to need to send someone else outward.
