As if there wasn’t already a reason to believe members of the media are out to get the New York Mets, one tweet (are we still calling them that?) from MLB insider Jon Heyman confirmed it.
During the first inning between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, the former committed three errors. Rather than mock the Yankees or shoot straight, Heyman decided to find a way to insult the Mets.
Four batters into Rays 1st inning, the Yankees have 3 errors. Very early-season Mets of them. 1-0 Rays.

Defense was certainly a problem for the Mets. Errors, both ones mental and actually in the box score, spoiled more moments than we ever wanted to early on. But was that really the major takeaway from the Mets season? Their 6 error game was on June 24. Semantically, it wasn’t “very-early” by any stretch. Carlos Mendoza was fired on the morning of June 26. The defense wasn't sharp early on. The bigger issue was a shallow rotation, a lack of hitting, and some costly injuries.
Jon Heyman didn’t win over any Mets fans with this unneeded insult
Mets fans can self-depricate with the best of them in all of sports. Not the same level of lovable loser as the New York Jets, following the Mets is largely about expecting the worst. No fan should be offended by any insult hurled the way of the franchise as long as it’s accurate.
Through two games, the Yankees have played a very 2026 Mets brand of baseball. Nearly no-hit in the opener with a base running miscue immediately following the break-up of the no-no, they followed it up with what would end up as a 4-error game where both runs were scored on Ben Rice solo home runs. While the Mets didn’t have a complete one-man offense consistently enough in 2026, who couldn’t imagine a day of Juan Soto homering twice and that being it?
Digs at the Mets by professionals in the media were far fewer late in the season as the club pieced together some level of competency. It wasn’t until Pete Alonso’s return in September when many of the same critiques repeated from earlier in the season. Heyman’s reputation as a Scott Boras guy whose takes are batting 1.000 in favor of the agent and his clients helps explain why he has yet to turn off LOLMets mode.
Following a weekend previewing Freddy Peralta’s start against the Yankees, Heyman found a way to mention the Mets without referencing their underwhelming trade acquisition. That’s because Five Inning Freddy went 4.2, struck out 3, and allowed one of the home runs to Rice. A no-decision in a one-out-too-few to qualify for the win, there was no “can you believe he’s this good with the Rays?” storyline to take from the game.
The Mets had a strange defensive season that started off poorly and ended much better. Bo Bichette was fine at third base. Jared Young showed he can handle first base. Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing are defensive psychopaths. Let’s not forget Luis Torrens who continues to be a stalwart behind the dish.
The choice to involve the Mets at all on a social media post having nothing to do with them was unexpected. The Mets deserve plenty of lashings, but c’mon now. This one comment was strangely attention-seeking from a reporter who often gets offended easily.
