Handing out Gary Carter’s number 8 to rookie Nick Morabito stirred an outrage with fans last week. All but forgotten in what could have been a minor lapse in judgement, naivety, or revenge action by an employee headed out the door, there is a far graver New York Mets miscalculation looming.
In fact, there are several of them. On June 24, July 25, August 17, and especially on August 19 the team is giving away replica jerseys or bobbleheads of players that no one is either excited about or will be on the roster.
It’s Marlon Byrd t-shirt night all over again x4.
Get ready for the Mets to be the laughing stock because of four upcoming promotions
In 2013, Byrd was traded hours before the Mets were set to give away a replica jersey of his. Not an entirely unique situation and one that has happened in the past, it was more of an iconic coincidence than a miscalculation like the Mets have made in 2026.
June 24 is Marcus Semien replica jersey night. There was always a good chance he’d fail to become a popular Mets player. So far, that has held up. Hitting in the low .200s with an OBP unable to even match the number of Spartan soldiers at Thermopylae, the only rationalization here was the Mets figured he’d get worse as the year went along. Exactly a month to go, Semien would need to put up MVP-caliber numbers for anyone to get excited. It’s a giveaway for the first 15,000 fans. Is there a chance everyone shows up late?
July 25 isn’t as bad with Freddy Peralta bobblehead day taking place. It’s a Saturday versus the Los Angeles Dodgers which could mean a lot of Freddys headed toward the field if this is a nail in the coffin type of game. This year’s trade deadline isn’t until August 3rd so Peralta is probably still with the Mets at this point with the biggest conversation being which team he makes his next start for.
August 17 is pretty bad with Bo Bichette replica jersey night. A Monday against the San Diego Padres in the final weeks before summer won’t draw much of a crowd. The first 18,000 in attendance can get this. Bichette might play his way out of being a trade candidate by the Mets if his performance doesn’t rise so at least he will be here. It won’t convince fans to get to Citi Field early to ensure they don’t miss it.
Two days later on August 19 is the worst of the worst. Peralta has another giveaway, a replica jersey. Sure to land on the backs of camp kids on this 1:10pm first pitch game to conclude the Padres series, there’s an incredibly high chance Peralta is no longer on the roster. Hey, maybe he’ll end up traded to the Padres. His $8 million salary can fit within anyone’s budget.
Understanding the Mets couldn’t give out the same old promotions highlighting Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto every year, they were confident enough these four would be relevant and desirable. Maybe it’s not too late to change the names on any of these jerseys to Knicks players and completely alter the promotion. Make the glove on Peralta’s hand for the bobblehead a basketball and blame the manufacturer as to why it looks nothing like Jalen Brunson.
