Designated hitter and pitcher
Darryl Strawberry is one of the most memorable (and turbulent) sluggers in Mets’ franchise history. He spent eight of his 17 big league seasons with the Mets, batting .259/.357/.505 with 335 home runs and a 137 wRC+. From 1983 through 1991, Strawberry had the most home runs in the league, with 280. Dale Murphy came in a distant second place with 268. However, after 1991, Strawberry would hit double-digit homers just once more. He spent parts of five seasons with the Yankees from 1995 through 1999, and while he was still effective with a .864 OPS, Strawberry would face multiple injuries, including cancer, as well as suspensions related to off-field issues in the later years of his career.
Another former Met with a turbulent past is Dwight Gooden, the starting pitcher on this line-up. Gooden appeared in 16 seasons from 1984 through 2000, working to a career 3.51 ERA (111 ERA+, 3.33 FIP, and 1.26 WHIP. Gooden won Rookie of the Year and Cy Young in back-to-back years in ‘84 and ‘85, with one of the best seasons in recent baseball history in ‘85 when he had 1.53 ERA/229 ERA+ and 16 complete games. Gooden spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Mets. However, Gooden would get suspended for the 1995 season due to drug usage, an issue that would plague Gooden throughout his life. He returned to baseball in 1996 with the Yankees for the next two years. After bouncing around with Cleveland, Houston, and Tampa Bay, Gooden would finish out his career with the Yankees. The Mets retired Gooden’s number, #16, last season.
