Ex-Jets coach sure sounds like a bitter Yankees fan after Juan Soto signed with the NY Mets

Who knew athletes wanted the most money possible in free agent negotiations?

It has been a lovely December day for New York Mets fans. Basking in the glory of the Juan Soto decision which led him out of the Bronx and into Queens, as much of the enjoyment has been to see our New York Yankees neighbors in shambles. Yankees flags in the front of homes are hung at half-mast today because they’ve been spurned for little brother.

The biggest ongoing sports topic at the moment, former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan took a timeout from hinting at his desire to be re-hired by the team and discussed the Soto signing. Well, discussion isn’t exactly the appropriate word. More so, it was a rant about how players always seek the most money.

Who would’ve guessed that a human being would want the most money possible to do the same job?

Rex Ryan went full bitter Yankees fan with his unhappiness about the Mets signing Juan Soto

You’d think a guy like Rex (he’s like an Ichiro where it makes sense to call him by his first name) who coached for the Jets and even the Buffalo Bills—the only true team that plays in New York for what it’s worth—would have some happiness to see the little guy win for a change. March through September tends to be LOLMets. Around the start of autumn, it changes to LOLJets.

Of course Soto was going to take every dollar he could get. That was always the narrative. The Yankees had no advantage geographically. Familiarity might not have done any good thanks to an overzealous security guard who left a poor early impression on Soto.

So why is Rex so upset about Soto taking more money to play for the Mets?

Some quick research aka reading his Wikipedia page includes a line about Rex’s notoriety as a bandwagon jumper of sports teams. Often spotted sporting a variety of hockey jerseys depending on where he was living and/or working at the time, he doesn’t seem to have the same kind of desire to follow Soto from the Yankees to the Mets. Maybe he just cares about baseball more. Or maybe, having lived in Toronto previously, it isn’t even the Yankees he was hoping Soto would sign with all along. The Toronto Blue Jays should’ve ponied up more loonies if they wanted to bring him North of the Border.

I’m not sure what Rex expected (Rexpected?) the outcome to be in the Soto sweepstakes. The Mets gave him the most money with a contract with the potential to grow over $800 million. This isn’t the NBA where max contracts exist. And even if they did, we’d have to respect (Rexpect?) Soto’s decision.
