It’ll never be the New York Mets, right? Little brother. Irrelevant in their own city. LOL. Hey, do you like apples? How ‘bout them apples! We got Juan Soto.
Today is a day of celebration. Rubbing it in the face of New York Yankees fans is allowed. They’re going to tell you the money is ridiculous. They’re going to try to “cope” (that’s a buzz word these days) with what just happened. Offer them one of those granite tissues from elementary school. Allow them to stomp and shout and lie that they’re okay with this.
Enjoy it, though. And bask in what Jeff Passan believes was the ultimate deciding factor as to why Soto chose the Mets over the legacy of the Yankees.
A belief that the Mets have a better future than the Yankees isn’t outrageous
Who’s to say what either team will look like in the future? Every Mets prospect could be a bust. The Yankees could have a new core four in the not too distant future. Surely, plenty went into this decision. Such a minimal difference in the offers and a shared city between the two highest bidders, Passan’s suggestion of the Mets having legs for days and the Yankees sporting a pair of hairy cankles should have us feeling even better about the perception of the team in Queens.
Since Steve Cohen took over as the majority owner after the 2020 season, a move like this has been imminent. Rarely does a free agent of this caliber come around. Even a fraction of what Soto means and can do exists in the history of the game and should moving forward as well.
There are definitely other theories as to why a player like Soto could choose the Mets. A continued Hall of Fame career would make him possibly the greatest player in Mets history with multiple records to his name. He’d have a tough time even being in the top 10 of the best Yankees of all-time. If legacy matters, do it on a stage where fewer have won a championship, even fewer wear the team’s cap in Cooperstown, and not a single player has earned an MVP victory.
We’ll hear plenty of bogus reasons as to why Soto chose the Mets. Does it really matter why? It’s the what that counts.
