In an effort of futility, the 2025 New York Mets managed to go 0-70 in 2025 in games where they trailed after 8 innings. Zero ninth inning comebacks or later, they made it easy on opposing closers. Just one win in those games would have landed them in the postseason. There’s no telling what could have come from it although the sense has us all believing they would have been tossed aside like ragdolls in the first round against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets are far from the most embarrassing team in North American sports. The New York Jets wear glasses, a ponytail, and paint-colored overalls. They haven’t been to the postseason since 2010. They bring shame to the word shameful.
In Sunday’s final game of the NFL season, the Jets have a chance to do something on a similar level as the Mets’ failure to secure a late come-from-behind win. Through 16 games, the Jets have zero defensive interceptions. It’ll be the first time in the sport’s history where a team went all season without a pick.
The Jets saw the Mets go 0-70 in late comeback attempts and asked them to hold their beer
Are they on the same scale? The Mets lost games. You can, conceivably, be victorious even without any interceptions. The Jets, of course, aren’t winning a whole lot. They’re one of the worst teams in the sport and might not even end up with the first overall pick.
There really isn’t much of an exact baseball equivalent to something like this because of the length of seasons. During a 162-game schedule, just about everything happens. In the NFL's 17-game schedule, you can get away without a defensive player catching an errant throw or deflection.
Not directly related yet both equally as embarrassing, the difference between the Mets and Jets is what the former didn’t do directly cost them an opportunity to play in the postseason. A couple of interceptions wouldn’t have made a significant enough difference for a lost Jets season.
If the Jets and Mets are truly related, we know how things will end. The Mets going scoreless in their last game of the year means the Jets will have a safety drop a wide open pass that falls right through his hands. It’s the only way for things to go. And while we’re at it, look for something strangely unique going on with the Brooklyn Nets.
