New York Mets fans have seen this story before. With the announcement Sunday that catcher Francisco Alvarez would be shut down for six to eight weeks, the injury problems for a team that has already been dealt quite the hand has only gotten worse. The regular season doesn't start until March 27th, but the Mets are already missing several would-be key pieces of their 2025 squad due to injury.

Whether you're not caught up on all the recent Mets injuries or you want to read more about each of them, here is the injury update on every player so far starting the season on the IL.

C Francisco Alvarez - Hand

This one stings. Alvarez, who Carlos Mendoza announced Sunday would be going through surgery to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, is going to be out for at least six to eight weeks. Last season, Alvarez underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The injury held the 22-year-old back from a full breakout year, as he hit just eleven home runs in his 100 games played, with an OPS of .710.

Fans were looking forward to potentially seeing the young power hitter break out in full this season, but with more time missed and another surgery to undergo, it's feared it will take another year. Aside from an offensive breakout, Alvarez's defensive prowess will be missed. As one of the better pitch framers in the league, Mets pitchers will have to do without him behind the plate.
