What a strange offseason it has been in relation to the New York Mets stealing from the New York Yankees. Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and maybe more on the way? Despite a frustrating winter for many fans, the Mets are rubbing salt in the wounds of a relatively inactive Yankees squad.
The theme of ex-Yankees leaving for the Mets continued Thursday night with the announcement that the second best international free agent out there is doing the same.
BREAKING: Top prospect SS Wandy Asigen will land with the New York Mets at the start of the 2025-2026 international class on January 15, per multiple sources.

A massive move in the international market. Full story coming soon on Beisbol FR.
Wandy Asigen will reportedly join the Mets next month as part of the international free agent signing period after backing out of a deal with the Mets. Francys Romero sounds sure to report on some of the more specifics of it. In the meantime, Mets fans get an evening to gloat as the Yankees wonder what went wrong here.
Wandy Asigen coming to the Mets is an exciting turn yet no sure thing
Ten years ago, MLB Pipeline ranked the best 30 international free agents of 2015 and it’s going to make you laugh. In 2015, Juan Soto was 25th on the list. Fernando Tatis Jr. was ranked 30th. Way at number two was Vladimir Gutierrez, a pitcher who has appeared in 33 big league games.
The 2015 list is one of the rare ones with multiple recognizable names. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Andres Gimenez, and even recent Mets free agent signing Cristian Pache were there. The list, like many top prospects lists, included plenty of guys we don’t know either.
At 16, it’s ridiculously premature to declare this a major victory for the Mets as easily as it is an embarrassment for the Yankees. Any other team losing the second ranked international prospect to the Mets wouldn’t be as much of a story. Going to the Mets, a day after Weaver to a team that has already stacked itself with ex-Yankees players and coaches, makes it a twist a uniquely Big Apple story at the moment.
It’ll take several years before we know whether or not this was the biggest Mets theft from the Yankees or a $3.8 million bust. Asigen will join Elian Pena as one of the game’s top rising teenage prospects. Last year, the Mets signed Pena and after a horrible start saw him finish the year strong. The Mets are no strangers to the international free agent market, however, they haven’t really had a truly impactful player from it come up through the system for quite some time. Jose Reyes was signed in 1999. Asigen wasn’t born until 2009.
Before we throw a parade, let's see what he does and if he gets cold feet in January.
