How the NY Mets can outbid the Braves in a Freddy Peralta trade

If this is what the Braves could offer, the Mets will have to beat it with an even more impressive package.

Freddy Peralta remains one of the hottest names on the MLB trade block. The Milwaukee Brewers ace has drawn the attention of more than the New York Mets with teams like the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers now involved.

Over at House That Hank Built, they took a look at the kind of trade it would take to acquire Peralta. They’re dishing out their best, 9th, and 10th ranked prospects. The most notable name on there is Cam Caminiti, the 72nd ranked prospect in MLB. He’s only 19 and regarded as a fast-rising pitching prospect.

In addition to him, HTHB is sending the Brewers an outfielder plus another pitcher. The Mets can certainly top this. However, as a basis for the trade, this might be what it’ll cost the Mets.

This Mets trade package can beat the proposed Braves deal for Freddy Peralta

Oh, it stings! Jonah Tong? It feels like a must to come close to matching this Braves trade package without getting completely original. Tong is a top 100 prospect and the closest (but better) one in comparison to Caminiti. Forget convincing the Brewers to take Brandon Sproat instead. They’re going to demand Tong, who appears to be the more favorable pitching prospect at the moment.

We don’t stop there. They also pick up power hitting first baseman/corner outfielder Ryan Clifford. This gives them a bat and potential first base option in the near future. If there’s one thing their lineup lacks, it’s power.

Finally, we toss them a second pitcher. Will Watson is highly regarded and ranks above players who could pass him by the time MLB Pipeline updates their list. He’s trending toward becoming a trade chip even if the Mets don’t have much of an urgency to deal him away just yet.

Youth is the major difference in these two packages as the Braves send the Brewers two 19-year-olds. Other than Elian Pena, the Mets don’t have a truly significant teenage prospect at the moment. He seems a bit too untouchable for a rental starting pitcher.

If the Braves are indeed prepared to trade their number one prospect, Tong is a must for inclusion. Could we tempt the Brewers with swapping him out for a pitcher like Jack Wenninger and another arm? Trades are always a battle of quality and quantity. The hottest player available on the trade block at the moment is going to put a team’s farm system in the poor house. Signing Framber Valdez doesn’t seem so bad after all.
